Where to stay in the Marrakech medina: riads and hotels by budget
The medina is Marrakech’s walled old city, a UNESCO World Heritage site. Most people stay in riads, traditional houses built around a courtyard, among the souks and within walking distance of Jemaa el-Fna square.
Quick answer
Choose the medina if you want atmosphere, the souks and the monuments on foot. Expect narrow lanes that cars cannot always enter: you may carry your bags or use a porter, and there is some noise.
Ask the riad where the taxi drops you and how to walk to it, check whether the room is on the courtyard or the street, and see whether a terrace or pool is mentioned. For day trips, pick-ups are often at a meeting point near a gate: confirm it on the activity page.
Frequently asked questions
Is it a good idea to stay in the Marrakech medina?
Yes if you want to walk everywhere and stay in a riad. If you prefer wide avenues, easy taxis and a calmer setting, look at Gueliz or Hivernage instead.
How do I get to a riad in the medina?
Cars and taxis often stop at a gate or square because the lanes are narrow. Ask your host for the drop-off point and whether a porter will meet you, before you arrive.
Are there riads with a pool?
Yes, many riads have a small pool or plunge pool. In our selection the Pool tag appears when the description mentions one.
This is an editorial selection, not a ranking. We do not show ratings copied from other sites. A pool is shown only when the description mentions one; no mention does not mean there is no pool.
